My (Olivia’s) love for photography started when I was in the 8th grade. I remember my cousin taking a photograph of this tree on our family farm and I thought to myself how cool it was that that moment, the way the leaves were blowing in the wind and the snow was ever so glistening on the horizon, was forever preserved in time.
So I picked up a camera and started capturing anything and everything. My family, friends senior photos, football games, band hallway hangouts, and our cats. When I was a sophomore in high school I had the opportunity to travel to Hawaii with National Geographic Student Expeditions. It was then that I learned the power of story telling through photography.
When it came time to decide what my future held, I chose to study photojournalism in our Nation’s Capital. I moved out to D.C., learned the in’s and out’s of photography and photojournalism and the importance it held in the world. It wasn’t until the Fall of my senior year that it really hit me just how important having the photos and the memories of the people who surrounded me was.
At the age of 8, I lost my father.
At the age of 10, I lost my cousin.
At the age of 12, I lost my grandma.
At the age of 17, I lost my grandpa.
At the age of 21, I learned my mother had cancer.
And I know I’m not alone.
With all the powers that be, my mother survived cancer twice. But it was in that moment when she called my sister and I on a 3 way phone call, I was sitting on my bed and she gave us the news. My head went a million miles a minute and all I could think was I don’t have enough memories. There are not enough photos. Time is going too fast.
So I started documenting my family every chance I got. I moved back home to be closer and a few years later learned that I could do that very same thing for others.
“I just want to extend a heartfelt thank you for capturing some amazing footage and pictures of my grandpa at our wedding.
He’s been in the hospital the past half week and I’ve been nonstop looking through pictures and our wedding video to view clips of him as I remember him. These memories wouldn’t have been made if it wasn’t for your talent at capturing the best moments.
Thank you endlessly with providing us timeless footage of his dance moves and love for my grandma and my family.”
After realizing just how short our time can be on this Earth, Christian and I fell in love with the fact that this is the one day you and your favorite people are together. It deserves to be documented, cherished, and shared for generations. Giving couples the sounds of their favorite people’s voices and the fleeting moments of life.
To hear the slight crack in her voice as she recalled how long they have been married.
To feel the emotion when your eyes started to well up as you shared a dance with dad.
To be wrapped in warmth every time you see the way your person looks at you.
It’s why we do this. It’s why we care. And it’s why we pour our heart and souls into it.
